1. Make a plan
Draw out a little blue print of each room and determine what you want to use each room as to maximize the space and it's potential.
2. What is in your current home and where is it going to end up in the destination home.
If you live in a home for a longer period of time, you tend to accumulate many items and "stuff" that may not work in the new home. Now is a great time to go through all the closets and garages and any other places where you might store belongings and determine what to keep and what to get rid of.
3. Organize by material type in the kitchen.
Keep all small appliances together in one box and do this with plastic containers, utensils, dishware, etc. This helps you know exactly what you have and what you may have too much of. By seeing what you have all together it will help you know if you really need it all or not.
4. Are there new areas or rooms in the new home you don't have in your current home? Or vice versa?
If you are downsizing a room, you will need to get rid of some furniture to make room. If you are upgrading or have extra space in the new house, purpose that room for what it is intended and keep in mind of how you are going to use that space when you start packing the items from the current house.
5. If you are moving into a multi level home, assign a color to each box for what level that box will go on.
If you have more than one person helping you move it will greatly help in the future if all the boxes are on the right level to begin unpacking. In a smaller house having color coded rooms can even be more helpful.
